St. John's is a forward looking school that values its traditional roots. I feel honoured to be the Headteacher of St.John's when I lead this traditional presentation day, we invite all our old friends and local VIP's… and of course our very supportive parents of the Year 6 leavers.
The Craigie Award
The Craigie Award, founded in memory of Malcolm Lugard Craigie, a resident of Hampton Wick, a young man who volunteered for the Boar War, as a member of the Imperial Yeomanry. He was killed in action, I quote 'Gallantly Supporting his Officer at Bethlehem, in South Africa' on the 13th July 1900, 'Willingly sacrificing all for England'.
In honour of this sacrifice Malcolm Craigie's family decided, the award, originally a silver medal, and in 1947 a wrist watch, then more latterly; when most children have wrist watches, the Complete works of Shakespeare and an Encyclopaedic Dictionary , The Craigie family decided the award should be given to a boy who was chosen by his peers to demonstrate 'Honourable and Unselfish Conduct'.

This continues to be the case…year in year out, Year 6 have shown their maturity and sense of responsibility in making an excellent choice for the Craigie winners.
Later in 1965 the School Governors decided to give a similar award to a girl. At this time another Award came into being,
The Constance Harding Award in memory of Miss Harding, a retired Headmistress (and to those with long memories, sister of the famous Gilbert Harding). This award is given to the boy and girl who came second in the voting for the Craigie characteristics.
If you are an ex Craigie Award Winner, we would love you to contact us with your memories of this special day…
